Medical School Liaison

 

The Alliance provides on-going support for our local Indiana University School of Medicine-Fort Wayne, in a variety of ways:

 

• Our Medical Student Liaison Committee, led by Alliance member Liz Hathaway, supplies welcome bags to first year medical students, organizes and provides healthy snacks for the medical students to aid them during their busy schedules, and provides a meal at the end of each semester.

 

• The Membership Committee works to encourage medical student and resident spouses to join the Alliance, in an effort to bring their unique perspectives and talents to the group, while endeavoring to offer them a support system and guidance as they enter the medical community.

 

• Each August, the Alliance, in conjunction with the FW Medical School, sponsors a well-attended barbecue on the Medical School campus to welcome medical students, residents, and new physicians to our medical community. This is the ninth year for this event, and has become an annual tradition!

• Each October, the Alliance assists med students in hosting a Trunk or Treat fundraiser to benefit the local Community Harvest Food Bank.  Canned foods and admissions are collected from kids and their families who attend, for donation.

​

• The Alliance actively participated in, and helped to underwrite, the Docs vs. Suits fundraiser that benefited the FW- School of Medicine.  Chaired by Alliance member and past-president, Betty Canavati for seven years, the games raised nearly $500,000 for the med school.

 

• In 2011, we partnered with the ISMA and the ISMA-A, to hold a financial seminar for students, and residents.  The Alliance again, hosted another financial seminar on November 9, 2016, with our friends from SYM Financial Advisors.

 

• On May 31, 2017, the Alliance partnered with med students to participate in Habitat for Humanity's National Women Build Month 2017.  It was a great day and a wonderful way to build friendships and help the community.

• On October 23, 2019, the Alliance and the ISMA-A co-hosted a Lunch & Learn Baby Shower on Infant Mortality: A Safe Sleep Awareness Initiative, at the IUSoM-Ft. Wayne for students, faculty, nursing students and the community.  Guest Speakers included Mayor Tom Henry and Dr. Deb McMahan.  Donations benefited Healthier Moms and Babies.

The Alliance loves the opportunity to interact with and to help foster future physicians and their spouses!
